The United Nations announced that 4.5 million tons of grain are stuck in Ukraine, due to Russia-induced blockages at the ports where it is being stored. During normal times, Ukraine supplies approximately one-third of the world's wheat.
Considering the dangers of the situation, Martin Frick, head of the UN's World Food Program, said that “hunger cannot be a weapon.” Matthias Berninger, a past State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, said that Ukraine’s port blockages could result in a world food crisis in 2023.
Meanwhile, the people of Ukraine themselves need food. Learn about one way to donate here.
