Five months into the invasion of Ukraine, and Russian troops have been depleted. In an effort to rebuild their number, the Russian military has begun recruiting prisoners who have military experience.
According to Gulagu.net, an NGO in support of prisoners' rights that has begun reporting on the new recruitment campaign, many of the recent campaigns have centered around penal colonies. During one such campaign in a colony in southern Russia, the military successfully recruited 300 prisoners.
The Russian military has been using incentives such as high salaries and compensation for families if young men decide to take their chances outside of prison and go fight in the invasion.
