Russia is seeing a surge in flu and respiratory infections. The rate exceeds "epidemic" rates by 20 percent.

State media outlet Izvestia reported that, in just the week between September 18 and 24, 1.2 million Russians became sick with either the flu or another viral respiratory disease, with over 25,000 diagnoses in Moscow each day.

While it is common to see an uptick in infections as the weather cools, scientists say that this year's numbers are between 16 and 33 percent higher than normal. They theorize that this is due to fewer infections over the summer, which is leading to more infections now.

Health authorities say that a 60 percent vaccination rate would be needed to curb the rise in infections. At the same time, though, COVID cases are also on the rise.

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.

Bears in the Caviar

Bears in the Caviar is a hilarious and insightful memoir by a diplomat who was “present at the creation” of US-Soviet relations. Charles Thayer headed off to Russia in 1933, calculating that if he could just learn Russian and be on the spot when the US and USSR established relations, he could make himself indispensable and start a career in the foreign service. Remarkably, he pulled it of.
