Regional Russian schools have been given a billion rubles ($18.5 million) to purchase state symbols and flags to decorate their interiors in a more patriotic fashion.
The funds come from a new budget that is part of a federal project, "Patriotic Education of Russian Citizens." Thirty-one regions will receive the subsidies, Dagestan being the largest beneficiary of the budget, but the Nizhny Novgorod and Chelyabinsk regions will receive large portions as well.
This new project is not the only initiative that is looking to instill more patriotism among youth; earlier this year, Minister of Education Sergei Kravtsov said that, starting September 1, 2022,
the beginning of every school week will start with the raising of the flag and the national anthem.
These new initiatives reflect the Kremlin's broader desire to instill within students a stronger sense of patriotism and respect for those who have fought for the country.
