Reports across Russia for the last two weeks have told similar stories: elderly citizens of different regions are being arrested after setting fire to ATMs, banks, police cars, and post offices.

The arsonists were allegedly acting under the instructions of scammers in Ukraine. They posed as security agents and offered the pensioners large sums of money or returned access to blocked accounts in exchange for setting fire to specified locations.

This is just the latest wave of such crimes in Russia this year, with 34 arrests between December 13 and 22. Mediazona has reported 156 similar attacks since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Many have taken place around St. Petersburg and Moscow.

There are Petersburg revenants, grief-stricken avengers, Lithuanian vampires, flying skeletons, murders and duels, and even a ghostly Edgar Allen Poe.
