A recent investigation by Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's consumer protection agency, found gluten in 24.6% of foods labeled as gluten free.
The recently published 2023 study took 90,000 samples of "gluten-free" products from more than 8,000 stores. After more than a hundred different tests, investigators found that nearly a quarter of all "gluten-free" foods actually contained gluten, despite the growing popularity of gluten-free goods in recent years; by some measures, an 88% increase in just a year.
In addition, Rospotrebnadzor found discrepancies in nutritional listings for fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, as well as indicators of quality.
All this to say: Be careful what you eat.
