Cat's Got Your Train

Cat's Got Your Train
Felix the cat is on the right track! User Dmitry Markov, VKontakte

Every evening at 10:40 p.m., Felix the cat catches the Moscow to Pskov train at the Staraya Russa Station. Perhaps he has important business in the capital city, one might guess?

Not exactly; like most cats, this black-and-white-furred feline is mostly interested in just securing his next meal, and he has figured out an ingenious way to have it delivered right to him.

According to Dmitry Markov, a Russian photographer who shared this anecdote on his social media recently, all of the train attendants who work this route are familiar with Felix, and for several years now, they have made sure to prepare some sausage to toss out of the car for Felix when their paths cross in Staraya Russa.

As many Instagram commenters were quick to point out, it sure seems like Felix is rather religious about keeping his appointments at the train station, for he certainly does not appear to be an underfed animal.

It sounds like Felix has these train attendants trained

However, with the icy cold weather and no apparent warm bed for him to sleep in, perhaps Felix isn't the absolute luckiest kitty to have graced the Russian rail system.

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.

Faith & Humor

A book that dares to explore the humanity of priests and pilgrims, saints and sinners, Faith & Humor has been both a runaway bestseller in Russia and the focus of heated controversy – as often happens when a thoughtful writer takes on sacred cows. The stories, aphorisms, anecdotes, dialogues and adventures in this volume comprise an encyclopedia of modern Russian Orthodoxy, and thereby of Russian life.
