The Russian Spring Draft

The Russian Spring Draft
Vladimir Putin and Sergei Shoigu Press Office of the President of Russia

The annual Russian spring draft takes place from April 1 to July 15. This year, President Vladimir Putin recently signed orders for 134,500 new army conscripts. The decree affects men 18 to 27.

Many are concerned the new conscripts will be sent to the war in Ukraine. But Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said none of the new conscripts would be deployed to “hot spots.”

The issue with this? President Vladimir Putin has already sent new conscripts to Ukraine after stating that only officers or those with experience would be deployed, as confirmed by the Defense Ministry on March 9. A spokesman stated, in Putin’s defense, that military prosecutors have been assigned the task of punishing those responsible for disobeying orders from Putin to not deploy conscripts.

As of now, it is not clear if the conscripts will soon see war, or will receive proper training.

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.
