He Wouldn't Bear It

In a geography renowned for its close and distant encounters with bears, a Russian hunter never knows when he might step into the creature’s territory. In September in Siberia, hunter Anatoly Fomin emphasized, you might “meet one practically every day.”

It was October when Fomin’s hunter friend met with a less sociable member of the species, deep in the Taiga in Krasnoyarsky Krai. He was setting sable traps when the bear appeared near his home, and his dogs scared the beast into a state of attack.

The 58-year-old was wounded during the clash, and, unable to access cell service, left a note appealing for help in Fomin’s cabin. The letter warned of his worsening condition and stated that he would wait at his own place. The wounded man returned to his hunting hut, located 170 kilometers (about 105 miles) from the regional center, Boguchany.

“I arrived at the area, and I see that a note is lying there: ‘Sanya, help, a bear attacked.’ I ditched work and went to the base, didn’t stick around the mountain,” Fomin said on a November 28 broadcast in an interview with REN TV.

According to the online news portal Yarskgrad, Fomin's hunter friend waited 20 days before he received help. Fomin arrived to warn the police of the hunter’s precarious state on November 19.

Keep in mind, it really is quite the hike out there, and it’s a lucky man who can bear the scars of such an ordeal. The harassed hunter is, reportedly, now in fine health.
