Fencing It In

Fencing It In
The borders, they are a-changin'. Flickr, Tammisto

Back in May, Finland began the process of joining NATO. Russia's Ukraine War changed Finland's long-term view of their eastern neighbor and the country is seeking to strengthen its borders, fearing  Russia may use migration as a tool for exerting political pressure.

Anne Ihanus, senior adviser at Finland's Interior Ministry, said that a has been passed that will “improve the operational capacity of the border guard to responding to hybrid threats.” With the war in Ukraine, the urgency of creating a stronger border has only increased.

Currently, the fences lining the Russo-Finnish border are barely enough to keep Finnish cattle from crossing over into Russia. The plan is to build a true barrier.

The reinforced fences will most likely not cover the entire 830-mile border, only priority sections.
