After the Lord Mayor's Show

After the Lord Mayor's Show

“They are waiting for conversations from us, but not concrete actions. They are waiting for new roads, schools, kindergartens, modern and comfortable transport, safety on the streets, improvements to every yard.”

– Andrei Alekseenko, the new Mayor of Krasnodar

Don’t new politicians usually bless babies and make the rounds? Alekseenko, on the other hand, seems to have promised only empty words (still no new roads, people) on November 17. Speaking to RIA Novosti, administrative representatives of Krasnodar insist Alekseenko misspoke.

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.
