Twelve Russian women are joining the ranks of Moscow metro drivers (pilots? captains?) starting this month, the first new female hires since the 1980s.
This news comes as regulations put in place at that time were repealed. These rules banned women from certain jobs (356 of them, to be precise) that were excessively physically demanding or dangerous. In the case of metro drivers, the job ostensibly requires the lifting of a 10-kilogram object twice an hour, which precluded women from taking the position.
With the doing away of this regulation, 13 more women will be sitting behind the controls of Metro trains by the end of 2021, as they complete their training.
