Pyatigorsk

Pyatigorsk

Name: Anton Podgayko

Age: 27

Profession: Photojournalist

City: Pyatigorsk

How long have you been doing photography? I have been doing photography for about five years, although I have known all my life that I want to pursue this as a profession, and almost immediately gravitated to photojournalism. I left Moscow for Pyatigorsk, in order to shoot the Caucasus.

Can you give us a short description of your city? Pyatigorsk is located in the "Caucasian Mineral Waters" region and is a vacation town. People come here to be cured by the mineral waters, healing muds and pure air.

What is something about your area that only locals would know? Aside from its acclaim as a tourist mecca, Pyatigorsk also has many large factories for producing clothing from fur: coats and fur hats. This is connected with the fact that lots of sheep are raised in neighboring Caucasian republics.

There is also a huge wholesale market near Pyatigorsk, where they come from all over the Caucasus to trade. Trade is very developed because there is no large industry in the city or its suburbs, and people basically only work in tourism or trade.

Which places or sites are a must for someone to see if they visit your area? If you are in Pyatigorsk, you of course must visit the baths which have a nighttime view of the city, and of course each Pyatigorsk ice cream.
