Travel Tips

Rostov-on-Don (the nearest airport to Taganrog) is about 600 air miles from Moscow. There are daily flights from Moscow’s Vnukovo airport to and from Rostov-on-Don. The train south (20 hours) leaves from Moscow’s Kazan station.

Tourists can stay in one of five hotels in Taganrog. They are The Assol, The Bristol, The Taganrog, The Priazovye and Zolotoy Bereg (The Gold Coast). Author Shcherbina said her personal choice would be the Zolotoy Bereg (16A Schmidt Street, Telephone 311-357, 310-711). “It is very conveniently located in the old, historical section of town and overlooks the sea. All the tourist destinations are nearby. The windows offer marvelous views of the bay and the coast. The hotel is new and modern and the staff speaks foreign languages. Their single and double rooms are cozy and provide all the conveniences needed for vacation or accommodation.” Rates range from $50-$80, breakfast included. The Priazovye (2 Babushkin Street, Telephone 320-015), Shcherbina said, “appears to be just as good, although their rates are higher”: from $70-$220 for a room.

Taganrog offers many restaurants and cafes. You will find quality service and a choice of cuisine and beverages to suit any taste. There are restaurants specializing in a wide variety of European and Asian cuisines, such as Italian, Korean and Russian. Next to the Little House of Chekhov there is a Chinese restaurant, Tian Shan (65 Chekhov Street) and on Greek Street there is My Italy, where Italian wines are served with a theatrical touch. You will not leave hungry after a delicious meal in Slavyanskaya Beseda (A Slavic Conversation) or the restaurant Wave at 86 and 64 Petrovskaya Street respectively, and at Batterfish, on Privokzalnaya (Train Station) Square, you can enjoy exceptionally tasty seafood dishes.
