In Kaluga region, 40 kilometers from Maloyaroslavlets, there is a surprising hill. Its top resembles Napoleon’s profile. In 1992, two locals found a saddle here covered with gold. The men proved resourceful: they tore off the gold and brought it to a jeweler, trading it for a case of vodka, two bottles of champagne and a package of the then popular powdered drink “Yupi.” Some time later, a saber encrusted with precious stones was found on the same spot. It long enjoyed an honored place on the wall of a dilettante treasure hunter, but in time mysteriously disappeared.
Another improbable story is connected with the burial of French soldiers along the route of their retreat. The mortally wounded were buried haphazardly, because there was no time for rituals or services. Thus, in one of the suburbs of Odintsov, when a home was being constructed, they dug up the body of a French soldier. Most striking was that it was as if mummified: 200 years had hardly touched his rich mustache and uniform.
