TRAVEL INFORMATION

Tyumen is 325 km east of Yekaterinburg on the Transsiberian railway, or about a 5 hour ride. There are several direct flights between Moscow and Tyumen daily; the flight is about 4 hours.

The place to stay in Tyumen is the Quality Hotel, ul. Ordzhonokidze 46, ph. 394-040, fax 394-050 (city code for Tyumen is 345-2). In Tobolsk, the newly constructed Slavyanskaya (phone 345-119-9101, or in Moscow, 095-215-5041) is the place to stop.

One side trip from Tyumen you may be tempted to make but shouldn’t is to the village of Pokrovskoye, 50 km up the road from Tyumen toward Tobolsk. The infamous Grigory Rasputin was born here. But not as you would know it. The house he lived in was demolished in the Soviet era. Instead, speed on to Tobolsk and visit the Decembrist’s home and the Museum for Local Culture, one of the largest in Siberia.
