The library of Ivan the Terrible was actually created by Ivan’s grandfather, Ivan III (1462-1505). His second wife was Sofia Palaeologue, a cousin of the last Byzantine emperor, who brought to Moscow the library of her ancestors. Its contents are more or less known: it included the most valuable books of the ancient and medieval worlds, many of which are known today in name only. This library is absolutely priceless, but remains undiscovered to this day. It is known that, in the 16th century, Ivan the Terrible read many of these books. But what happened to them subsequently is a mystery. There are several places where this library could be hidden. One of them is the Kremlin.
