Letters to the Editor

To the Editors:

I love your print magazine, but get most of my news online. What are the best social media, apps, or web sites for following Russian Life in between print issues? Are you on Facebook? Do you publish the magazine in digital form?

Sam:

While we believe print magazines will always hold a special place in the media landscape, one that can never be replaced by digital media, we are certainly doing a number of things on the digital front to help bridge the gaps between our bimonthly issues.

We have a Facebook page, a Twitter feed, a blog, and do offer digital subscriptions to Russian Life, all reachable from our website, russianlife.com. We also recently inaugurated an online community, russianlife.org, where members can freely share ideas, news, photos and opinions in greater depth than Facebook allows. We’ll include a sampling of our offerings below. We hope you’ll join us online!

Question from the Favorite Russian Foods forum: I buy buckwheat, but am not sure the best way to prepare it. Some recipes say to dry fry it. Others say to put it in an oven-prove casserole and roast/bake for an hour or so. Any suggestions?

Reply: A Russian “Babushka” told me how to cook buckwheat. This is what she said..

You put the buckwheat in a pot and add water. The waterline should be above the buckwheat by two fingers... Cover, and have it cooking on low heat until done. The buckwheat will be loose and soft when done. This method works out very well. I’m sure you will be pleased with the results. I serve buckwheat with eggs. My kids love this. It’s a great way to start a day, and at keeps them until lunch.
