The Tretyak Record

Vladislav Tretyak is generally recognized to be one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Among his career and personal honors are:

• First All-Star in the Soviet league for 14 straight years (1971-1984)

• Thirteen league titles with CSKA

• Five times named league MVP

• Three Olympic Gold Medals (1972, 1976, 1984) and one Silver Medal (1980) – many attribute the Soviet loss in 1980 to the fact that Tretyak was pulled from the ice during the first period by the Soviet coach, Viktor Tikhonov, leading to a U.S. goal

• Golden Hockey Stick

• Voted Best Player in Europe in 1981, 1982 and 1983

• Order of Lenin (1978)

• Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1984)

• First Soviet or Russian player ever named to the Hockey Hall of Fame (1989)

• Voted Best Russian Hockey Player of the 20th Century in 2000

• Elected to State Duma in 2003 (United Russia)

• Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture, Sport and Youth

• Elected Head of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation on April 25, 2006 (his 54th birthday) by 93-0 vote (with 3 abstentions)

• Awarded Meritorious Service Medal by Canada (2006), first Russian ever to receive this honor
