This 400-year-old city lies some 850 km from Moscow. There are ample train and air connections between the capital and Saratov. An overnight train will get you to the city in about 14 hours, while twice-daily flights from Moscow’s Domodedovo airport will get you there in two hours. In summer (May-September), you can also catch a boat running between Volgograd and Saratov, which takes about 20 hours.
There are two decent hotels worth considering in Saratov, the Hotel Slovakia (ph. 267-618), which has a commanding view of the Volga (and which is being renovated), and the Volga Hotel (ph. 243-645), which is conveniently located in the middle of Nemetskaya street, but is not as upscale as the Slovakia.
There are plenty of good restaurants and cafes along Nemetskaya street and one or two along the waterfront. The indoor market in the center of town offers plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and is a good place to stock up on Liksar before catching your train ride out.
