Russians have a sense of time that can often leave foreigners puzzling. So we decided to look at some colloquial expressions about time. Read the phrases below, their literal translation, and the sample usage. Then try to sort them into the appropriate time categories that they signify (listed at just below).
___ Одна нога здесь, другая там. (Lit. One foot/leg here, one there. E.g. Сходи в магазин! Да побыстрее: ...)
___ После дождичка в четверг. (Lit. After a light rain on a Thursday. Indicates improbability.)
____ Тише едешь — дальше будешь. (Lit. The slower you ride, the further you will get. A proverb. E.g. Куда ты так спешишь? ... )
____ (Никак) руки не доходят. (Lit. Hands don’t (seem to) walk/get to it. E.g. Прости, что редко пишу, ...)
____ Одну минуточку/минутку! (Lit. One tiny/ little minute! Used to ask someone to wait, but often longer than a minute.)
____ Когда рак на горе свистнет. (Lit. When the crayfish whistles on the mountaintop. Indicates impossibility.)
____ Я сейчас. (Lit. I (am) now. Indicates that you will be right back, but “right back” is often not actually right away.)
____ Я ненадолго. / Я на минутку. (Lit. I (am) not long./ I (am) for a minute (stopping by or leaving). Same issue as with ”Я сейчас.” E.g. Привет! …)
____ Только что. (Lit. Just what. Used as “Just now.” E.g. Mама … пришла домой. )
____ (И) глазом не успеешь моргнуть! (Lit. (And) you won’t have time to blink an eye. E.g. Я быстро, ты и ... )
____ Невовремя. (Lit. Not on time. Used primarily as “not at a convenient/good time”. E.g. Простите, что я …)
____ Круглые сутки (Lit. Round “day & night”= round the clock (24h) - “сутки” doesn’t exist in English. E.g. Он работал….)
____ (Мне) некогда. (Lit. (To me) there isn’t when. E.g. - Пойдём в кино? - Не могу. ... )
____ Поспешишь — людей насмешишь. (Lit. If you rush, you’ll make people laugh. A proverb.)
____ “Буду через 15 минут.” (Lit. (I) will be (back) in 15 minutes. A sign left on a closed door of a shop, kiosk, etc. that leaves you wondering when the 15 minute break actually started…)
