A Wolf, who rarely looked before he leapt,
One night sought out the fold
Where sheep were kept.
But in the dark and cold
He crept into the yard wherein the hunt dogs slept.
The hounds awoke the minute he got in.
They knew the scent of wolf without a doubt.
And recognized a foe.
And made an awful din,
On fire to sink their teeth into his hide.
The kennel guard began to shout.
“A thief, a thief” and to his side
Men raced with gun and club and hoe
And fire too was brought
So they could see just whom they’d caught
The cornered Wolf was pressed against the wall.
His teeth were bared; his gray fur stood on end.
He looked as if he longed to eat them all.
But soon he came to comprehend
That now he would be made to pay
For every sheep he’d put away.
What could he do to change his fate
But sue for peace—negotiate?
He slyly smiled, inclined his head
And in his sweetest voice he said,
“Come, come my friends, why all this noise?
It isn’t any use!
I’ve come to seek a truce
And end this feud; call off your boys!
Forget the past, your sheep are safe from me.
I’ll fight off any other wolves I see
Who dare to stalk your herd.
You have my wolf’s sworn word.”
The master of the hounds broke in,
“Now, listen friend, you cannot win.
I’m gray because I’m wise, quite unlike you.
Of wolves I’ve learned a thing or two.
With them there’s only one sure truce.”
With that he let his dog pack loose.		 Волк на пса́рне
Ива́н Крыло́в

Волк но́чью, ду́мая зале́зть в овча́рню,
Попа́л на пса́рню.
Подня́лся вдруг весь пса́рный двор.
Почуя се́рого так бли́зко забия́ку,
Псы зали́лись в хлева́х и рву́тся вон на дра́ку;


Псари́ крича́т: “Ахти́, ребя́та, вор!”


И вмиг во́рота|воро́та на запо́р;


В мину́ту пса́рня ста́ла а́дом.


Бегут: ино́й с дубьём,


Ино́й с ружьём.


“Огня́! - крича́т, - огня́!”


Пришли́ с огнём.


Мой Волк сиди́т, прижа́вшись в у́гол за́дом.


Зуба́ми щёлкая и ощетиня шерсть,


Глаза́ми, ка́жется, хоте́л бы всех он съесть;


Но, ви́дя то, что тут не пе́ред ста́дом


И что прихо́дит наконе́ц


Ему́ расче́сться за ове́ц, -


Пусти́лся мой хитре́ц


В перегово́ры


И на́чал так: “Друзья́! к чему́ весь э́тот шум?


Я, ваш стари́нный сват и кум,


Пришёл мири́ться к вам, совсе́м не ра́ди ссо́ры;


Забу́дем про́шлое, уста́вим о́бщий лад!


А я не то́лько впредь не тро́ну зде́шних стад,


Но сам за них с други́ми гры́зться рад


И во́лчьей кля́твой утвержда́ю,


Что я...” - “Послу́шай-ка, сосе́д, -


Тут Ловчи́* перерва́л в отве́т: -


Ты сер, а я, прия́тель, сед,


И во́лчью ва́шу я давно́ нату́ру зна́ю;


А потому́ обы́чай мой:


С волка́ми ина́че не де́лать мирово́й,


Как сня́вши шку́ру с них доло́й”


И тут же вы́пустил на Во́лка го́нчих ста́ю́.
