For travelers not coming from Veliky Ustyug, (60 kilometers south of Kotlas), the simplest way to Solvychegodsk in the summer is to take a train from Vologda (or Moscow) to Kotlas, and hire a car at Kotlas. (There is a Solvychegodsk train station beyond Kotlas, but it is at least 20 kilometers from Solvychegodsk itself, which is on the other side of the Vychegda.) From Kotlas there are two ferry crossings: one in town and another, less easy to find, some 15 kilometers up the Vychegda. The latter ferry actually docks on the bank at the Annunciation Cathedral and is the preferred way to get back to Kotlas.
For advice on transportation and accommodations at Solvychegodsk, call the museum at 81837-79-254.
In the winter, there are no ferries, and one must drive from Kotlas up the Vychegda River to Koryazhma, where there is a winter pontoon bridge set in the ice. After crossing the river, turn left and ask a local which of the plowed roads leads to Solvychegodsk. A four-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended.
