The recommended way to reach Kargopol is to take the Arkhangelsk train from Vologda (or Moscow) to Nyandoma. At the Nyandoma station, scheduled bus service is available for the 90 kilometer ride to Kargopol. There are also private cars for hire on the station square. Prices are generally reasonable, but they change frequently under current conditions. Always agree on a fare beforehand.
Kargopol has one small hotel, recently renovated. The rooms (some with private baths) are clean and the hotel restaurant (open only in summer) is acceptable. Apart from this restaurant, there are not many other public eating places in Kargopol, but it is possible to arrange a home stay. For information on museums and tours, contact the Kargopol History and Art Museum (ph.: 81841-21-496), an excellent institution whose director, Lidia Sevastyanova, is able to provide comprehensive tourist services.
