Isabel Hapgood

1 contribution found for Russian Life and/or Chtenia.

Isabel Hapgood (1851-1928) was one of the earliest American translators of Russian literature into English. The daughter of a Boston inventor, she introduced Americans to the works of Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gogol, and others (including the French writer Victor Hugo), and to Russian epic songs. She also traveled to Russia frequently, did journalism, and knew Tolstoy personally. She was in Russia when the Bolshevik Revolution broke out and was one of the first to report on the murder of the Romanovs.
