José Vergara is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His current research focuses on the intertextual relations between James Joyce and Russian writers such as Vladimir Nabokov and Andrei Bitov. He has published articles on Yury Olesha and the Czech multilingual poet Ivan Blatný, as well as a book chapter on Daniil Kharms.

Any author who chooses to write about music faces an immense task. The most abstract of all arts, music forces the writer to put into words and descriptions – much more concrete things by comparison – its ephemeral nature. Writing about music is indeed a form of translation: it comes with its sacrifices, but it also opens up new perspectives that would otherwise remain undiscovered.
