ANDREI SINYAVSKY (ABRAM TERTZ) (1925-1997) was known as a literary scholar and critic when, in 1965, he, along with writer Yuly Daniel, was arrested for publishing his fiction abroad, under the name of Abram Tertz. The trial, in which Sinyavsky was sentenced to seven years of hard labor, was a watershed in Soviet political history. After his release, he emigrated to France, where he taught at the Sorbonne.
