In a highly publicized visit to a training ground in Tver oblast, Moscow Region governor Andrei Vorobyov promised mobilized Russian men regional social support as a show of thanks for their service.

Vorobyov said that, in addition to financial stipends, the men's families will receive priority treatment in educational institutions and hospitals, and family members will be assisted in finding a job.

Also on his visit, Vorobyov chatted with citizen-soldiers about the conditions at their barracks, their food, and their supplies. He himself handed out packs and medical supplies.

The visit comes as news from the front lines grows grimmer every day.

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.
