A buried treasure is a secret to be revealed by someone else, even if that someone else is one’s future self. It is not unlike a text, to be read at a future date by someone other than its creator. The resulting, remarkable creative possibilities of the treasure as a literary trope have been obvious to writers since at least the composition of the tales of The Arabian Nights, in the ninth century.
