AVRAHM YARMOLINSKY (1890-1975) was born in what is now Ukraine and emigrated to the United States in 1913. He graduated from the City College of New York and earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University, later teaching Russian language and literature at both institutions, as well as heading the Slavonic Division of the New York Public Library. He wrote extensively on Russian literature and intellectual history, and translated many classics. He was the husband of poet Babette Deutsch, with whom he co-translated and co-edited anthologies of Russian and German poetry.
